Facts about Pennsylvania

Known as the Keystone State, Pennsylvania was the second state admitted into the new United States in 1787. The colony itself was the brainchild of William Penn, a Quaker who sought a place where adherents to the faith of the Religious Society of Friends could worship as they saw fit.

As of the 2020 census, Pennsylvania had 12.78 million residents. While Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, is most closely associated with the state, it's not the capital city. That honor goes to the city of Harrisburg.

In terms of area, Pennsylvania is the 33rd largest state in the Union. Different parts of the state experience various kinds of weather, although every area of Pennsylvania is known for colder winters and summers that tend to be warmer and humid.

As with other states, Pennsylvania does have a state bird and a state flower. The bird is the ruffed grouse, while the glower is the mountain laurel.
