Facts about Maryland
The states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, along with the District of Columbia, are all part of an area in the United States known as the Mid-Atlantic Region. Three other states are normally considered part of the region. Combined, they play major roles in the formation of the United States, its early history, and the continued forward movement of the country.
All three states are among the original 13 that ratified the Constitution in the 1787-1788 period, and were involved in the establishment of the District of Columbia. As is true for many states along the Atlantic seaboard, manufacturing was a key industry that helped to drive economic as well as population growth well into the middle of the 20th century.
A number of key historic sites are located throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region, some of them dating back to before the American Revolution. As with the rest of the country, the economy of each state has diversified over time, helping to create new fields of employment. The area was an early pioneer in the movie industry before most operations moved to California. Today, diversification has allowed residents in all parts of the Region to train for and work in industries that did not exist just a few decades ago.
