Facts about Columbia
Located in Howard County, Columbia is a census designated place that is somewhat newer than other population centers in Maryland. The CDP is included in what's known as the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The community was planned from the beginning, a characteristic that sets it apart from other CDPs around the nation.
The brainchild for the new community was James W. Rouse. in 1967, Rouse sought to create an intentional community that would mirror the best in human values and attributes. Part of his hope for the community was that it would be free of any type of racial, religious, or class distinctions. It was also intended to be an improvement over the subdivision design for communities that was so popular at the time.
According to the results of the 2020 census, Columbia had more than 104,600 residents. This makes it the second most populous community in the state, with Baltimore being the most populous.
