Richmond is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. Richmond was incorporated in 1742 and has been an independent city since 1871.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 62 square miles (160 km²), of which 60 square miles (160 km²) is land and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²) of it (4.3%) is water.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 204,214 people living in the city.
