Facts about Camden
Serving as the county seat for Camden County, Camden is considered part of the Delaware Valley. The city proper is found on the Delaware River, situated directly across from Philadelphia. As of the 2020 census, Camden had 71,791 residents, making it the 14th most populous city in New Jersey.
Camden was incorporated in 1828, and was named as the county seat in 1844. The inspiration for the city's name comes from judge and lawyer Charles Pratt, who was the first Earl Camden. At present, more than 20 neighborhoods make up the city.
For much of its history, manufacturing was key to Camden's economy. Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, mill and other manufacturing facility closings led to diversification. Today, education and healthcare are two of the key industries within the city. Renewal projects in the downtown area and along the waterfront remain a priority of the residents and the local government.
