Facts about Baltimore
With more than 585,000 residents, Baltimore is the most populous city in the state. It's also the 30th most populous city in the United States. Baltimore enjoys the status of being an independent city, a designation that was made in the state's constitution in 1851.
The city is roughly 40 miles from Washington, DC; together, the two cities compose the major metropolitan areas in the Washington–Baltimore Combined Statistical Area.
One of the key battles of the War of 1812 was fought in the area. It involved a failed attempt by British forces to take nearby Fort McHenry. It was then that Francis Scott Key wrote a poem that would eventually be known as "The Star-Spangled Banner" and would become the nation's national anthem in 1931.
Today, Baltimore is home to a number of businesses and organizations that include the NAACP, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Social Security Administration. On the sports front, Baltimore is home for the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens.
